Attitudes, Presuppositions, and the Binding Theory

Abstract In order to handle presuppositions in the scope of attitude verbs, binding theory allows triggered a subject's beliefs be bound at matrix level; and it non-doxastic attitudes (Geurts, 1999; Maier, 2015). However, we argue that this leads serious overgeneration, for example predicts unacceptable ‘Sue will come party, but Bill is sure she won't only Sue party’ should equivalent acceptable nobody party’.
